M.I.A. is talking about the terrible advice she received from Jay Z during her battle with the NFL. If you recall, M.I.A. performed with Madonna during the Super Bowl Halftime and was chastised for giving the camera the bird. She says, “A middle finger, it’s like get a fucking grip. People were like, ‘oh you’re lucky you’re not in jail, give up all your profit, be this slave for the rest of your life.'”

The singer/rapper says that while she was in the midst of her suit where the league “would keep one hundred percent of my earnings for the rest of my life if I ever earned more than $2 million,” Jay Z, who was her manager under Roc Nation, urged her to “sign that shit.” She tells Huck magazine, “If you’re talking about racism and sexism, that moment in my life showed the cracks in everyone I knew.”

A documentary film by director Stephen Loveridge was played at this year’s Sundance film festival. Check out a preview below.
