“Onika Tanya Maraj” was born in Saint James, Trinidad & Tobago on December 8, 1982. She was raised by her grandmother in Trinidad until she was 5 years old when they moved to New York. She finished schooling at LaGuardia High School in Manhattan. After graduation, Minaj struggled between working on becoming an actress and being a waitress at the Red Lobster (she was later fired).
Minaj started her singing career with Brooklyn group Full Force in 2004. She released her first mixtape in 2007 and another one in 2008. In 2009, she was discovered by Lil Wayne and became a recording artist for his Young Money Entertainment. A week after her 2011 debut album ‘Pink Friday’ was released, it had sold 370,000 copies. It turned platinum shortly thereafter earning $1.89 million with over 4 million copies sold. The album also made it to the Billboard charts and gave her her first American Music Awards as Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist in 2011. This breakthrough performance for a debut album made her one of the most powerful hip hop artist at the time.
Minaj’s second album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” released in April 2012, also turned platinum. A third album, “The Pinkprint,” immediately followed and had worldwide sales of over 650,000 copies.
The bulk of her net worth comes from record sales, concert ticket sales and performance fees. As of the 1st quarter of 2017, Minaj has sold 30 million digital singles, 3.5 million albums and 60 million singles.
Contributing to her net worth was her previous role as a judge on “American Idol.” She was also the model for Roberto Cavalli’s 2015 spring and summer fashion collection. Minaj’s Pink Friday Fragrance Collection launched in the United States and Australia in September 2012 also helped to pad her earnings and afford her a $11.8 million Beverly Hills Malibu mansion.
Minaj brags that she gets paid $50,000 for every guest verse.
