Known as Cornel Iral Haynes, Jr. of his family and friends, Nelly was born on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas. His parents separated when he was seven years old and he moved to St. Louis, Missouri.
Nelly’s eyes were set on become a professional baseball player but when that didn’t pan out Nelly began performing with St. Lunatics, a local hip-hop group.
The group never landed a record deal but when Nelly went solo he was signed by Universal Records in 1999. The following year, Nelly’s debut album, “Country Grammar,” was released and it only took a few weeks for it to hit #1 on Billboard 200.
