Yo Gotti, born Mario Mims, was forced to live on the streets of Memphis, TN in the third grade after his mother and aunt faced prison time. It was these hard ships that drew his attention to the relatable gangster rap of the 1990s. He independently released his first album, “Youngsta’s On a Come Up,” in 1996. Between 2000-2006 Gotti released 4 more albums.
In 2009 Gotti started to make success on Billboard charts with his first major label album. Although a few singles had chart success, Gotti and RCA Records parted ways.
In 2013, Gotti’s own Collective Music Group label signed to a distribution deal with Epic Records. Features with YG, J Cole and TI brought Gotti bigger successes. A remix with Nicki Minaj and a feature with Meghan Trainor brought Gotti into the mainstream. In 2017, Gotti’s mixtape Gotti Made-It lead single “Rake It Up” featuring Nicki Minaj peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming his highest charting single ever.
Gotti also received royalties from a song featured in the Emmy Award wining show Atlanta and received an undisclosed signing bonus from Roc Nation.
Gotti’s prolific career of album releases and shows (he earns around $50k a show) have brought him $3.5 million as of 2017. His CMG label including released from Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta also bring in cash flow and with “Rake It Up’s” success, much more money is in Gotti’s future.
