February 24, 1977 (40 years old)
Floyd Mayweather’s has the skills that pay the bills. Floyd got his early boxing skill set from his father, Floyd Sr., who was a former welterweight contender. His uncle, Jeff Mayweather was in the business of boxing as well and a former IBO super featherweight champion.
Mayweather’s father started bringing him to the gym as soon as he learned to walk. His father used to raise him up so he can reach the speed bags in the gym. It did not take too long before Mayweather started to throw punches at anything that he could see. When he was 7 years old, he had his first pair of gloves for boxing.
During the start of his career, Floyd Mayweather was called “Pretty Boy” and he had won in the 1993, 1994 and 1996 National Golden Gloves Award.
As an amateur boxer, he finished 84-6 in his career. However, on the year 1996 during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, he lost a fight against Serafim Todorov of Bulgaria. It was a very controversial fight where Mayweather had to accept the bronze medal.
But that event did not stop him from becoming a professional boxer which happened on October 11, 1996. He then started his professional winning streak with his father serving as his coach and trainer. He captured his first world title as the WBC super featherweight champion in 1998 when he won a fight against Genaro Hernandez.
His boxing career grew even more in 2000. He even fought in four different weight classes. In the year 2002, he took home the WBC lightweight title. In 2005, the WBC super lightweight title and in 2006, the IBF, IBO, WBC and IBA welterweight titles. He also defeated Oscar De La Hoya in 2006 and took home the WBC super welterweight crown.
Those mentioned successes in his boxing career increased his earnings. He was the third biggest-paid American athlete in 2010, with an estimated income of $60 million.
Mayweather was able to make more money after that through winning more fights. This includes the $240 million dollars he got from his fight in 2015 with Manny Pacquiao. That event also had the highest number of Pay-Per-View buys in the history of boxing. The estimated total earnings of the fight were $600 million, which made it the biggest-grossing one-day boxing event that ever took place.
Mayweather’s fight with Andre Berto last September 2015 added a whopping $32 million dollars to his bank account. That secured his title as the biggest-paid athlete worldwide from the year 2012 to year 2016.
And again, Floyd Mayweather’s net worth shot up from $340 million in 2016 to $$440 million million in 2017, after winning his fight with the UFC star Conor McGregor. He is now enjoying retirement after leaving the ring undefeated with a healthy bank balance.
