Comedian Tiffany Haddish celebrated her 40th birthday with a huge party. She chose to use it as an opportunity to celebrate her Jewish heritage as well holding what she calls her “Black Mitzvah.” Haddish’s father was born in Eritrea to an Ethiopian-Jewish family. Estranged from him from a young age after her parents’ divorce, Haddish did not learn of her Jewish roots until the age of 27, after which she became determined to reconnect with her heritage.
“Black people,” said Haddish, “when we were brought here to America, a lot of our heritage was stripped from us, and me being able to find out who I really am and what I am and learn more about my people and the heritage, I feel like it’s very important to share that with the world. We can all start digging and find out who we are and what we are and start having some honor and pride in ourselves”.
After the event, Haddish said, “Last night was one of the best days of my life. I had so much fun. Thank you to everyone that came out to support one of my Dreams.” Go inside the party with this video below and you can watch her special on Netflix called “Black Mitzvah” as well.
