Timbaland Has Concerns For Drug Culture in Today’s Hip Hop Because He Was Once An Addict

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, legendary producer/artist Timbaland says he had a nearly fatal addiction to prescription pain pills. Timbaland explains that he started using OxyContin to heal the pain of a gun shot injury when he was in his 30s. His need for the pain killer became out of control and his career and marriage began to suffer because of it.

He says, “The pills helped block out the noise,” he said. “I’d just sleep all day.” Jay-Z stepped in at one point and told him to stop doing interviews because he was saying “crazy shit.” It took a near death experience for Timbaland to ween himself off the pills for good. “I can tell you is that there was a light. I woke up trying to catch my breath, like I was underwater. But through that whole thing I saw life – I saw where I would be if I don’t change, and where I could be if I did.”

Wow! So glad he came out of that but he has concern for today’s generation saying, “I came from the era of drug dealers [making rap hits], Now we’re in the era of drug users….These kids come from a place where they don’t have money, don’t have a real home. It affects them, and you hear it in the music.”

Now Timbaland has just finished working on a new album with Justin Timberlake which he says,  “It’s gonna put him on another plateau.”
