J. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on an American military base in Frankfurt, West Germany. His father is an African American veteran and his mother is a white postal worker. When his father abandoned the family, Cole’s mother moved him to Fayetteville, North Carolina. During his youth, Cole expressed interest in basketball and music. He was the first-chair violinist for the Terry Sanford Orchestra until 2003. At the age of 12 Cole began rapping and writing lyrics in notebooks. After his mother purchased him an 808 machine, Cole began recording beats for his songs.  Cole is highly intellectual and graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA before moving to NYC to further his career. While in NY he attended St. John’s University on a scholarship and graduated magna cum laude in 2007, with a 3.8 GPA.


Cole was originally passed up by Jay Z but after releasing his second mixtape “The Warm Up”, he was signed to Roc Nation in 2009. He toured colleges and did several features including ones with Jay Z, Wale, Miguel, DJ Khaled and more. XXL chose Cole for their 2010 Freshman List.


Cole opened for Drake during his  Light Dreams and Nightmares UK Tour in 2011. His first chart success was the single “Work Out” that  samples “The New Workout Plan” by Kanye West and interpolates “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul. Leading up to the release of his debut album, Cole put out a free song or video every week. “Cole World: The Sideline Story was released September 27, 2011 debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, with 218,000 copies in its first-week of sales.


In 2016 Tidal produced a documentary on Cole followed by the release of his fourth studio album “4 Your Eyez Only“. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 492,000 album-equivalent units. The track “Deja Vu” entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 7 without being released as a single, becoming J. Cole’s highest charting song. All 10 songs from “4 Your Eyez Only” debuted in the top 40 of the Hot 100.


In 2018, Cole broke records with previously held by Drake and Taylor Swift with the release of K.O.D.. The album had 64.5 million streams on Apple Music and accumulated 36.7 million streams on Spotify in its first 24 hours. It was Cole’s 5th number 1 album.


Cole has his own record label called Dreamville Records distributed by Internscope. He is also a part owner in Tidal. It is through his wise business choices, feverish fan base, and touring that Cole has amassed a net worth of $15 million. He gives back to his hometown through his Dreamville Foundation.
